ABOUT US

The Department of Sheep Husbandry Jammu is under the Administrative control of the Principal Secretary to Government, Animal/ Sheep Husbandry & Fisheries Department, J&K. which is providing direction and administration for overall functioning of the Department. The Department in Jammu Division is headed by Director. He is assisted by two Joint Directors, i.e., Joint Director Extension for field activities and Joint Director Farms who monitors the functioning of Government Farms. At District level District Sheep Husbandry Officers are controlling officers assisted by Sheep and Wool Development Officers and Veterinary Assistant Surgeons. At base level Sheep Extension Centers are providing necessary health care, breeding cover and extension facilities to the sheep and goat breeders.

Role of sheep and goat rearing in the Jammu division

The livestock industry plays vital role in the state economy. This has been major factor for sheep and goat rearing as prime occupation by communities like Gaddies, Bakerwals and Chopans and in the recent times by the rural masses of plain belt of Jammu division. The sheep and goat sector fulfills a pioneering function in sustainable economic development and food security. Tribal and rural population of the division is directly or indirectly engaged with rearing of 18.06 Lacs sheep and 13.28 Lacs goats (Census figures for 2018).
